Hitchcock’s famous “bomb under the table” scenario outlines the tiered distinction between shock and suspense, so it shouldn’t be any surprise that a film about real life bomb disposal in one of the most dangerous places on earth looks to be white at the knuckles with the latter. The Hurt Locker is open on limited release now, and the first eight minutes are watchable right up here via /Film.
/Film has the full story as well, and they throw some much deserved praise to the cinematography of Barry Ackroyd, which opts for naturalism over spectacle. Ackroyd also worked on United 93, which is not what I’d call an enjoyable movie, but one that demands viewing. Movies like these pop up every now and again to remind you that the same medium that gleefully churns out popcorn nonsense can also grip you tightly by the heart and hollow you out on a whim.
Edit: Whoops! Video’s gone. If you hurry to the theater, maybe you can still see the first eight minutes attached to the other 122.
